Two unpopulated islands- Isla Magdalena and Isla Santa Maria- stand in protection of the vast ecosystem within Bahia Magdalena. This 31-mile long bay, nestled along the western coast of Baja California Sur is home to Puerto San Carlos, a remote fishing village on the bay’s surrounding peninsula. Small in size and population, yet there is no shortage of unpaved, sand roads and friendly locals.
The unique temperature fluctuations of the bahia within the lagoon complex and over 15,000-hectares of mangrove forests create an ecosystem unlike anywhere else in the world. This bay was the feature of Costa’s 2023 Marlin Project, among many other research studies and preservation goals the region attracts.
This glistening gem is home to a massive list of migratory mammals, fish and bird species. Abundant doesn’t even touch the surface of the depths that Magdalena Bay has to offer the adventurous fishermen and women.

With such diversity in the bay, the sheer variety of species to target is as intense as the fishing itself. The Los Locos guide team will navigate you through seemingly endless inshore and offshore options. Due to the sprawling location of the bay, this world-class fishery has something for every angler.
Spend your time offshore and happen upon swirling bait balls of mackerel and sardines as you sight cast to the feeding striped marlin, wahoo, sailfish and mahi mahi on either fly rods or spin tackle.
Venture around the hundreds of miles of mangrove systems inshore, where your guide will use the tide to drift and float as you throw each cast. Fish with a fly-rod or light spin tackle for large snook, grouper, snapper- just to name a few of the bountiful species inhabiting the natural cover.
Los Locos guides weigh the potential for targeting aggressive roosterfish either by boat or on the soft sand beaches on fly rods, light spin or conventional tackle. Underwater structures of the Continental shelf, shipwrecks and rocky high points provide incredible opportunities for jigging. Cast your jig and let it sink in the 50-200 foot depths as you take aim at pompano, Sierra mackerel, snapper, white sea bass, yellowtail and jack crevalle- among other species.

The municipality of Comondu is a commercial hub for “El Crucero” (The Crossroad) between those heading North, South or to the Peninsula. The closest major city to the small, remote fishing village of Puerto San Carlos is Ciudad Constitucion.
Agriculture is the primary industry in this region, within the fertile Valle de Santo Domingo. The majority of the produce cultivated in this region is immediately loaded into commercially owned trucks and trailers and sent North, to cross the border and land in U.S. supermarkets and stores. Wheat, citrus, chickpeas, asparagus, cotton and corn are grown in substantial quantities, almost exclusively for stateside consumption.
Chef Joshua has spent years cultivating the region in his own way- establishing and growing deep bonds and forming relationships with the best owners and managers of the local landscape’s farms and businesses. On any given day, he may take a trip into town and be greeted by the friendly and familiar faces as he is welcomed into local shops to hand-select the day’s menu offerings. Chef has learned to keep his menu loose as he begins each day, because you never know who will turn up with a crate full of oysters or freshly butchered choice cuts of small-farmed meats. You’ve never tasted asparagus like that which was just harvested by Chef’s own hand, as he peruses the fields alongside the workers under the Baja sun.
With a background in fine dining, Chef Joshua created Travel Creel as a means to combine his two biggest passions and talents- incredible food and equally marvelous fishing. The Creel Crew pulls out all the stops, with hospitality being their business.
The staff at Mar Y Arena have welcomed Joshua into the kitchen to serve up the most unforgettable meals you will ever have. Every detail is intentional, each flavor combination meaningful. Chef Joshua cooks from the heart, with intention and respect for the bounties that Baja provides. Travel Creel is responsible for each day’s lunch and dinner, but don’t worry, he’s invested time teaching free local cooking classes, so the ladies running the on-site restaurant know how to make the most delectable breakfast sandwich, an otherwise impossible find anywhere in or around San Carlos.

3:30 pm - Odds are high you will be buzzing from the thrills on the water as the boats glide back to the boat ramp. Hop back into Merv for the jaunt back to the lodge.

“I have had the great privilege to fish around the world from South America, Cuba, Hawaii, the Bahamas and all over the states. I have never experienced hospitality, food quality or the understanding of local fisheries and sustainability like Travel Creel! It is literally like a 5-star chef is flown in for every meal. From the gourmet lunch sandwiches to the lobster, steak or Mediterranean nights. The food is unequaled to anything I have experienced anywhere in the world. And to experience all this in a sleepy Mexican fishing dirt road village is what made it so special to me….
-
I can’t even find a Coke Zero can, but I can have the best locally caught lobster I have ever put into my mouth or local fish that actually tastes like the ocean. I have now experienced the Creel twice and each time, I’m blown away more than the first. Other than quality and hospitality, the other driving force in Joshua and his wife’s vision is an eye toward conservation and protecting the land, water and animals that live in them for the future. They live the true values of an outdoorsman and everyday they are preparing the best food in the world in a fish or hunting camp, while at the same time trying to save the world, one hungry angler or hunter at a time.”

“I have traveled all around the world and been in many fishing lodges and I have never, in any of my travels, had food this good.”

Travel Creel’s owner and chef, Joshua Schwartz, has joined forces with Los Locos co-owner George VanDercook. Together, they have spent years establishing the best connections and sources in the region. This section of Baja cultivates some of the world’s best fruits and veggies, usually not making it to the local supermarkets. Their connections over the years have evolved into providing produce such as asparagus, picked by their hands the same day it is featured on your plate. Shrimp the size of a lobster haven’t even been hauled off the boat before they make it into a Travel Creel cooler. Local butchers and bakers proudly deliver quality goods they’ve just made or received when George announces that Chef is in town…
